Installing Pocket iTrak and iTrak Companion

System requirements

  • Symbol PPT 2800 series with

    • 1 slot serial charge cradle

How to install

1. Step 1 - Connect your handheld

   • Follow the instructions in manuals provided with the handheld device to connect it to the PC using the serial cradle.
   • Leave the device in the cradle until installation is complete.

2. Step 2a - Install Microsoft ActiveSync

   • Download the latest version of Microsoft ActiveSync from http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/resources/downloads/pocketpc/activesync37.mspx
   • Run the installer, and accept all default options.
   • On successful install, Microsoft ActiveSync will find the handheld device attached to the PC and prompt to set up a partnership.
   • Create a guest partnership. Microsoft ActiveSync should display "Guest / Connected".

   Step 2b - Install Microsoft XML Parser 3

   • Download Microsoft XML Parser 3.0 SP 4 from XML General Downloads -> MSXML Downloads
   • Run the installer.

3. Step 3 - Install Pocket iTrak

   • Unzip PocketiTrakInstaller.zip into a temporary directory and run Setup.exe from there.
   • Accept all default options.
   • On successful install it will show a message that some tasks are left for the handheld device.
   • Check the screen of the handheld device in cradle. It may ask some questions confirming whether to overwrite some files with an older date. Tap on "No to All" in that case.
   • Note that, Pocket iTrak needs to be installed only once in a PC, regardless the number of different handheld devices used with that.
   • Later, to install this software into another handheld device
     • Place the device in the cradle.
     • Setup a guest partnership.
     • Select Tools-->Add/Remove Programs from Microsoft ActiveSync menu.
     • Check "MailSource Pocket iTrak" and click OK.

4. Step 4 - Install iTrak Companion

   • Unzip iTrakCompanionInstaller.zip into a temporary directory and run Setup.exe from there.
   • Accept all default options.
   • Once installed, run the application from Start menu and then exit.

5. Step 5 (Windows 98 only) - Install DCOM98

   • Download the latest DCOM from http://www.microsoft.com/com/resources/downloads.asp,
   • Run the installer, and accept all default options.
   • Restart the computer.

6. Step 6 - Install Microsoft Data Access Component

   • Download the latest version of Microsoft Data Access Components (version 2.8 SP1) from http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-gb/data/aa937730.aspx,
   • Run the installer, and accept all default options.
   • Restart the computer.

Configuration

• Pocket iTrak

  • Take the handheld off the cradle.
  • Run Pocket iTrak in there.
  • Login using your ID card.
  • Go to "Setup-->Configure" and set the iTrak site name and the email address.
  • Save configuration.
  • Go to "Setup-->Events", five events should be listed in the screen.
  • Quit the application.

• iTrak Companion

  • Place the device in the cradle. iTrak Companion should be launched automatically. Ignore Microsoft ActiveSync dialogs.
  • Live server is ron.m4.net. To test configuration, you can keep mmsmirror.metafour.com.
  • Type in appropriate site name.
  • Click the Transfer button. It should save configuration and initiate transfer.

Note on PocketPC 2002

Symbol ships newer PPT2800 terminals with Microsoft PocketPC 2002 installed. Due to a problem in factory settings Pocket iTrak may show errors like:

"Unknown ClearSoftTrigger Error(A00000010)"

To fix the problem, follow these steps:
• Check your device operating system version number from Start -> Settings -> [System Tab] About. It should be Version 3.0.11171 (Build 11178)

   

• Download and save this file NoBeam_PPC2002.reg into your PC. Using Windows Explorer copy this file to the Application folder of the mobile device.

  

• Cold boot the device (pressing the Function button and the Reset button togather. See PPT2800 manual for details).
• Check Start -> Settings -> [Connections Tab] Beam settings. The checkbox should be cleared.

   

• If you have already installed Pocket iTrak on this PC before, using Microsoft ActiveSync to re-install it on the device.
